What is a variant?
Combined options of a product are called variants, e.g. if the product is a T-shirt, the medium red T-shirt is a variant and the large green T-shirt is another variant.
Each variant can have their own:
Code/SKU
Stock (& settings)
Price
Tax type
Shipping measurements
Availability
Website status
Images
Is anything inherited from the product?
Yes. If any of the following information is left blank, it's inherited from the product:
Shipping measurements
Price
Tax type
How do I add a variant?
Note, you can only add variants if the product already has options. If not, Create options and values first. You'll find out how to do that here.
Go to Commerce > Products > Products.
Find the product you are looking for and click the View button in the Options column.
Click the Variants tab below the product title.
Click the Add button to the right of the Variants heading.
You'll see a table with all the variants available (based on combinations of all existing options). Choose which variants you want to create and optionally add a specific code, pricing & stock for each variant.
Click the Add button.
How do I edit a variant?
Go to Commerce > Products > Products.
Find the product you are looking for and click the View button in the Options column.
Click the Variants tab below the product title.
Find the variant you are looking for and click the View button in the Options column.
Click the Edit button in the top right.
Edit the variants details.
Click the Update to button.
How do I edit multiple variants?
There are a range of options for editing multiple variants, such as:
Publish
Unpublish
Download barcode labels
Turn stock control on
Turn stock control off
Hide if no stock
Turn stock control off
Hide if no stock
Show if no stock
Customer can order if no stock
Customer cant order if the is no stock
To editing multiple variants:
Go to Commerce > Products > Products.
Find the product you are looking for and click the View button in the Options column.
Click the Variants tab below the product title.
Tick the checkboxes next to the variants you want to edit.
Click the drop-down menu below the variant list.
Select the option you want.
Click the Go button.
How do I add an image to a variant?
Variants use the product images, see Product images for more information about adding, editing and deleting product images.
Go to Commerce > Products > Products.
Find the product you are looking for and click the View button in the Options column.
Click the Variants tab below the product title.
Find the variant you are looking for and click the View button in the Options column.
Click the Edit button in the top right.
Scroll down to Product image
Select an Image.
Click the Update button.
How do I add an image to multiple variants?
Go to Commerce > Products > Products.
Find the product you are looking for and click the View button in the Options column.
Click the Variants tab below the product title.
Tick the checkboxes next to the variants you want to add the image to.
Click the drop-down menu below the product list.
Select Change product image.
Click the Go button.
Select an Image.
Click the Update button.
How do I delete a variant?
Go to Commerce > Products > Products.
Find the product you are looking for and click the View button in the Options column.
Click the Variants tab below the product title.
Find the variant you are looking for and click the Delete button in the Options column.
Click the Delete button to confirm.
How do I delete multiple variants?
Go to Commerce > Products > Products.
Find the product you are looking for and click the View button in the Options column.
Click the Variants tab below the product title.
Tick the checkboxes next to the variants you want to add the image to.
Click the drop-down menu below the product list.
Select Delete.
Click the Go button.
Click the Delete button to confirm.
