What is a product type?

Types allow you to define common variations/attributes for a particular product type. For example, you might create a type for T-shirts. You can then enter variations/attributes that are commonly associated with the T-shirts, e.g. size, colour, style, etc. Then add attributes for each variation e.g. small, medium, large. Once you've added a type, you can then select it when you're adding a product. All the variations will automatically be added in for you.

You can also add custom fields for a particular type. For example, you might create a type for Furniture. You can then enter custom fields like height, width and depth. When you are adding/editing a product these are shown as separate fields, and are nicely displayed in a table on each of your products.

Using types makes the process of adding similar products a lot quicker. 

When should I not use types?

If you only have a couple of products that are similar, creating product types is overkill and you'll be creating extra work for yourself!

How do I add a type?

  1. Go to Website > Products > select Types in the left hand menu.
  2. Click Add in the top right.
  3. Enter a Title.
  4. Click Add.

You can now add variations to this Type:

  1. Beside the new Type, in the Options column, click on Variations.
  2. Click Add in the top right
  3. Add a Title, e.g. Size, colour etc.
  4. Add attributes for the variation, e.g. If the variation is Size, the attributes might be small, medium, large.
  5. Click Add.

How do I assign this type to a product?

  1. Go to Website > Products > select Products in the left hand menu.
  2. Click on the product.
  3. Click edit type in the top right.
  4. Select the type from the drop-down.
  5. Click Update.

How do I edit a type variation?

  1. Go to Website > Products > select Types in the left hand menu.
  2. Next to the type, in the Options column, click Variations.
  3. Next to the variation, click Edit or if you want to edit the attributes for the Type, click Attributes.
  4. Change the details for the variation or attribute.
  5. Click Update.

How do I re-order the type variations?

  1. Go to Website > Products > select Types in the left hand menu.
  2. Next to the type, in the Options column, click Variations.
  3. Click the move icon on the left of each variation to move it up or down.

How do I delete a type variation?

  1. Go to Website > Products > select Types in the left hand menu.
  2. Next to the type, in the Options column, click Variations.
  3. Next to the variation, click Delete.
  4. Click Delete. Note: If any products are using this type variation, all the sub-products will be deleted and you'll need to recreate them.

How do I add a type attribute?

  1. Go to Website > Products > select Types in the left hand menu.
  2. Next to the type, in the Options column, click Variations.
  3. Next to the variation, click Attributes.
  4. Click Add in the top right.
  5. Enter a Title.
  6. Click Add.

How do I edit an attribute?

  1. Go to Website > Products > select Types in the left hand menu.
  2. Next to the type, in the Options column, click Variations.
  3. Next to the variation, click Attributes.
  4. Next to the attribute, click Edit.
  5. Change the details of the attribute.
  6. Click Update.

How do I re-order the attributes?

  1. Go to Website > Products > select Types in the left hand menu.
  2. Next to the type, in the Options column, click Variations.
  3. Next to the variation, click Attributes.
  4. Next to the attribute, click and drag the move icon on the left to move the attribute up or down.

How do I delete an attribute?

  1. Go to Website > Products > select Types in the left hand menu.
  2. Next to the type, in the Options column, click Variations.
  3. Next to the variation, click Attributes.
  4. Next to the attribute, click Delete.
  5. Click Delete. Note: Any sub-products using this attribute will be deleted.

What is a custom field?

Custom fields allow you to hold extra information (e.g. brand, model number) against a product type. You can set up custom fields to apply to just the product (e.g. brand), or to the sub-product (e.g. model number). Any product custom fields are shown on the product listings on your website.

Custom fields can have pre-defined options, for example: You may already know all the brands you support. Just choose pre-defined option when adding a custom field. You can then add all the options separately. Alternatively, if you choose 'text', then a simple text-box will appear, where you can enter anything.

How do I add a custom field to a product type?

  1. Go to Website > Products > select Types in the left hand menu.
  2. Next to the type, click Custom fields in the Options column.
  3. Click Add in the top right.
  4. Enter a Title.
  5. Choose a Value type: Custom fields can have pre-defined options, for example: You may already know all the brands you support. Just choose pre-defined option when adding a custom field. You can then add all the options separately. These will appear as a drop-down menu when you are adding/editing a product.
  6. Click Add.

Now you can add these custom fields to any product with this type. To do so:

  1. Go to Website > Products > select Products in the left hand menu.
  2. Click on the product.
  3. Click edit detail in the top right.
  4. Scroll down and you'll see the list of fields that you can add the product to.
  5. Click Update.

How do I edit a custom field?
